How: The data breach was discovered on December 12, 2023, but it occurred around September 21, 2023. The incident resulted from an employee inappropriately handling the file, with no indication of malicious intent. Verizon is taking measures to improve technical controls, notifying regulators, and offering free identity protection and credit monitoring services to the affected individuals. As of now, there is no evidence that the exposed information has been misused or shared outside of Verizon.
